[postscript] to the preface of 'Antiquity of Man', relating to Lubbock's challenge. Notebook is identified on the inside first page as 'Alphabetical list of recent and tertiary fossil shells compared for identification'. This is followed by the note on the 'abbreviations of Localities'. Finally, there is the guidance ‘the figures in red ink shew the number of the Note Book, those in black ink the pages’. From page 29, the list is headed 'Mr Darwin's Shells'.

Scope and Contents Handwritten in ink manuscript notes, includes some copy letters relating to Darwin and the critical reception of his Origins of Species. Subject matter includes basalt, oolite flora, protosaurus, archegosaurus, foraminifera, geological ages, Plato's ideas, creation speculations, intellect and development of humans, race, languages, submerged forests, the Dead Sea and the deluge, the existence of continents. Scope and Contents This small green notebook contains copy letters to and from Charles Lyell in 1860 and 1861. Letters are written in pencil and ink. The second half of the notebook is blank. Correspondents include Charles Darwin, F. F. Jamieson of Ellon, Dr Hooker, .
